MJC Ready To Show Off Exciting Changes During Maryland Million
This year’s Maryland Million is more than a showcase of the state’s Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry—it also offers the Maryland Jockey Club an opportunity to unveil the investment it is making in the industry.
A major renovation of most of the Laurel Park clubhouse was completed in time for the Oct. 22 Maryland Million, which was launched in 1986. But it’s part of a much larger project: a rebuild of the entire facility with a look to the future, which could include Maryland’s first Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer for The Stronach Group, which owns Laurel and Pimlico Race Course, on Oct. 18 indicated Maryland is the right location for investment and growth.
“We’re actually really proud with (the Maryland Million) because it gives us an opportunity to show how great Maryland is for racing,” Ritvo said. “I hope the Maryland Jockey Club can do its best to complement the programs that already have been in place here. In working with other jurisdictions for The Stronach Group, I can say I’m impressed. The energy and history and culture in Maryland racing is just spectacular.
“I feel good having the opportunity to work here and improve on what has been built over a long period of time.”
The MJC is also in the midst of transforming the Laurel backstretch with modern barns that include climate control features and security cameras.
“I hope everybody sees the improvements on the backside as well as what we can do on the front side to bring customers back,” Ritvo said. “We also want to help create new owners and breeders and show people that the business has a future. We’ve seen a lot of success in Florida over the past 10 years.”
The Stronach Group owns Gulfstream Park, which has slot machines and has gradually increased live racing dates. Laurel and Pimlico don’t have gaming licenses but purses at the two tracks as well as facility improvements are supplemented by a percentage of revenue from Maryland casinos.
“We took the best opportunity with the slots money to make our business here grow,” Ritvo said. “We’re sending a story to (lawmakers in) Annapolis that we’re here to stay and here to grow. We’ll be looking to add more race days and more big-event days. We hope to deliver a product you’re all proud of.”
